HOT - The New Hub Summer Programme
The New Hub Summer programme is in full swing with a steady flow of young people using the facilities and taking part in the many activities. One of the highlights has been regular street performance skills with Gareth Chivers in which he teaches unicycle, juggling and other archane arts. Gareth is available for hire to run these sessions for your group - 0212033264. Also popular has been the scooter road safety sessions with Krista Hobday, Road Safety Coordinator, Tasman District Council; Karel Pavich -NZ's 1st woman road racing champion and Kevin Guthrie Police of NZ Police. Lots of arts and physical activity sessions are available - many at no charge.
Several local companies have helped enormously with our Summer Programme:
Fresh Choice; Rebel Sports;
Sterling Sports; The Body Shop;
Price's Pharmacy; The Warehouse;
Whiteman Architects and Toy World.
Thank you all for your contribution.
The New Hub is open Mon- Sat 12.00-6.00pm during the holiday period until 4th Feb. Details are here: Summer Programme.

Santa Pays a Visit
Santa turned up again for the New Hub Xmas party last year. Around 40 young people and some parents enjoyed a yummy afternoon Xmas Feast that included all the Xmas essentials - ham, jelly and icecream....and, yes, there were vegetables!

Welcome Caron Proctor
Just in time for the summer rush we welcomed Caron Proctor to the team. Caron has replaced Charlie Auinscough as our new Recreation Manger. Charlie was an incredible asset to The New Hub creating and leading a fantastic recreation team and developing several really important projects including the very successful Get Cooking programme. Charlie and her partner have decided to move north, closer to family and establish themselves in Raglan. We understand that she is now hooked on fishing so we're expecting some care packages of smoked kahawai and schnapper fillets any day.
Caron comes to us with a background in hospitality and business and she has already stamped her mark on The New Hub with several really exciting intiatives. She arrived with only weeks to spare before the very busy summer period and picked up the reins with hardly a stutter. Make the time to pop in and say hello. We think you'll find her energy and enthusiasm very infectious! We are, however, still teaching her the rudiments of table tennis....

New Year's Eve
Over 200 young people dropped into the New Hub for Off the Edge, our New Year's Eve event.
Visitors had a choice of activities throughout the night including dancing to the resident DJ; an outdoor skate park; indoor skate ramp; pool tables; yummy food from the cafe; face painting and our brand new Laser Quest room. By all accounts a good time was had by all.
Thanks so much to the Nelson City Council - without their support the event would not have happened. Also thanks to: Armourguard, HYPE-GS team (including our own Chrissi Tamihana)and the fantastic staff, led by Suzanne O'Neil, who all worked on the biggest night of the year.

Way to Go: Shape Up
These very popular sessions return on Thursday 4th February. They run for an hour in our dance studio and are designed to cater to all fitness levels. And we mean all! These sessions are ideal for for people reovering from injury and illness, older particpants staying in shape and anyone looking for some variety in their weekly fitness activities. The sessions cost only $3.00 and have been very popular so drop in early to get a place and benefit from this Way2Go initiative.

Parents' Workshop
16 parents of teenagers (and one grandparent!) attended a very successful workshop Everybody Matters - It's Better Together at the New Hub on Saturday 28th November. The workshop was organised with the The Nelson Safer Community Council and was presented by two local experts in youth resiliency - Mike Milstein and Annie Henry. Partcipants enjoyed a stimulating day and shared a lunch courtesy of the organisers. Their feedabck from the day was very positive and all gained a great deal from meeting and talking with other parents. Such was the enthusiasm for the learning in the workshop, another is already being planned and the group from this first workshop will meet again soon to set up regular get togethers to support each other in the challenging role of raising healthy, happy teens. The New Hub and The Nelson Safer Community Council intend to run several more workshops this year and we hope that each will result in similiar local groups of parents meeting regularly of their own accord.

Youth Transition Services
YTS1:
The New Hub has four youth coaches working closely with young people 15-19 years to help them with work and training. You may have seen them recently at expos and seminars around the region. Any young person is elegible for their service to help with CV's, looking for work, making decisions about their future or dealing with barriers to work or training. Call 548 0103 to talk to our youth coaches.

Room Hire
The New Hub has several really nice rooms for hire to businesses and community groups. You might have noticed the Salsa and Indian dance and Nia classes running in our Gym/Dance Studio or the groups meeeting in our upstairs seminar room or the breakfast meetings in our cafe. These organisations have found the spaces ideal for gatherings, meetings and courses. Please feel free to call in and make an appointment to look around. Rates vary according to the nature of the hiring group and we want to make The New Hub facilities accessible to all - so please call and ask.

After School
The New Hub is open from 3.00pm to 6.00pm every weekday and is the ideal place for young people to fill their time waiting for parents to finish work. There is no charge for a young person to be at the New Hub in the afternoons and plenty for them to do. If they also wanted to enrol in a workshop or take part in organised activities they are, of course, most welcome. Why not consider the New Hub as an option if you have a young person waiting between school and when you finish work. A safe, fun place to hang out while Mum or Dad finish work.
