Squish

What is SQUISH? Well, SQUISH is a short documentary about young people's experience of racism in Nelson. The documentary was made by the international youth group and hosted by The New Hub over the past 8 months. SQUISH, will be shown to an invited audience of local youth and agencies this month and includes dramatised sequences of real-life experiences of individuals in the group and interviews with a range of young people living in Nelson.

The project was funded by Save the Children NZ as part of its work to give young people a voice and built on a photography exhibition called ŒThe Changing Face of Nelson' the group had produced in 2007.

The project idea came from some of the group who were interviewed by One News and Agenda following racist assaults on Korean youth last year. The documentary explores the complexities of race issues in Nelson and provides advice about how to deal with and challenge racist behaviour.

The DVD was made using a technique called Participatory Video, in which the individuals are given the skills and tools to make a quality production and have ownership over the content and style of the programme. This process has enabled the group to have their views and findings expressed.
